Joe B. Wyatt
Director
Joe B. Wyatt advises
on corporate-academic partnerships, information technology, and
public and private sector management projects.
Mr. Wyatt is
Chancellor Emeritus of Vanderbilt University, having served as
Chancellor from 1982 to 2000. During his eighteen years as
Chancellor, Mr. Wyatt led Vanderbilt’s ascent into the top tier of
U.S. teaching and research universities. He oversaw the expansion of
the university’s academic offerings and diversity of the student
body and the increase of Vanderbilt’s endowment from $170 million to
more than $2 billion.
From 1972 to 1982,
Mr. Wyatt was a member of the faculty and administration at Harvard
University, serving as Vice President for Administration from 1976
to 1982. During this period, he led EDUCOM, a consortium of 450
universities that developed computer networks and systems for
sharing information and resources. In addition Mr. Wyatt co-authored
the book, Financial Planning Models for Colleges and Universities,
and wrote numerous papers and articles in the fields of technology,
management and education.
Mr. Wyatt’s earlier
career focused on computer science and systems, beginning at General
Dynamics Corporation in 1956, and continuing at Symbiotics
International, Inc., a company he co-founded in 1965. Mr. Wyatt was
Professor of Computer Science at the University of Houston and
directed the University Computer System and Network from 1965 to
1972, prior to leading Harvard University’s Office of Information
Technology beginning in 1972.
Mr. Wyatt has
conducted research for the National Science Foundation, the Ford
Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and the Eli Lilly
Foundation, among others. He is a patentee and consultant in
computer system design and computer networking.
Mr. Wyatt was a
co-founder, Vice Chairman of the Board, and Chairman of the
Investment Committee for the Massachusetts Technology Development
Corporation, a public/private venture capital group that has
financed a large number of successful technology-based companies in
Massachusetts. Active in a number of service organizations, he is
former Chairman of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and former
Chairman of the Government Industry Research Roundtable of the
National Academy of Sciences. He is currently Chairman of the Board
of the Universities Research Association, The Education Quality
Institute, and New American Schools, Inc. all of Washington, DC.
In addition, Mr.
Wyatt is a Director of Advanced Network and Services, Inc. and the
EAA Aviation Foundation. His corporate directorships include Ingram
Micro, Inc., El Paso Corporation, Hercules, Inc., and the
Aerostructures Company.
Mr. Wyatt is a Fellow
of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a
member of the Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, and Beta Gamma Sigma
professional honor societies.
He holds degrees in
mathematics from Texas Christian University and The University of
Texas.
